Charlotte Lane Leavitt*
Charlotte Lane was the daughter of Levi Leonard Lane and Polly Benedict Lane. She was born in New York on June 29, 1829. Two years later the family moved to Ohio, and later to Michigan, where she spent her girlhood days. She married Josiah Leavitt on December 25, 1851. In 1860 she left her mother, two brothers and three sisters and traveled to Utah. They settled in Ogden, where she joined the Church two years later and remained a staunch and faithful member all her life. She carded the bats, spun the yarn and made her husband's first suit of clothes in Utah. She was a very ambitious woman. Her life was devoted to service for others. She was the mother of three sons and three daughters. She was widowed at age 67. After Josiah's death she lived alone in a wooden house on Twenty-Third Street and Monroe Avenue in Ogden, Utah. She kept busy making rugs, which she sold to support herself. She kept house for herself as well as kept a garden until she died at age 87. She alsways had a smile for everyone she met. *From a history by Lura L. Chambers Wright May 27, 1965.
