John Leavitt

John was born 27 July 1798, the 5th son of Jeremiah Leavitt and Sarah Shannon, in Exeter, Rockingham NH. He was the 6th generation of the family of John Deacon Leavitt.

He was married to Lucy Rowell on 13 March 1822 in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. Lucy Rowell came from a family who came to Hatley in about 1802. She was born there in 1803. John and Lucy lived in Compton, which is 8 miles south of Hatley where most of their relatives lived.

In 1837 John and Lucy along with other members of John's family left on a wagon train for an 800 mile trip to Kirkland,Ohio , which was one of the area the Mormon church had settled. It appears that John and Lucy stopped in Burton, Ohio in about 1840, cleared some land built a house and started farming. It appeared they never went to Kirkand, Ohio with the rest of the Leavitt Family. William Brown who was a neighbor of John and Lucy in Burton, OH. He was a widower and had three children living with him; Benjamin Franklin Brown, Philander Brown and Emmeline Brown. When John and Lucy moved on in 1845 and settled in Cambria Michigan, they were joined by Benjamin Franklin Brown, Philander Brown and sister Emmeline. In Cambria they became member of the Mormon church and wanted to continue to Salt Lake City.

John died 17 Feb 1852 in Cambria, Hillsdale, MI while the rest of his family continued their journey to Salt Lake City.
